NRS International’s family-run charity Bilqees Sarwar Foundation (BSF) has formally inaugurated the newly renovated East Medical Ward (Male Unit) at Mayo Hospital, one of the biggest and oldest hospitals in Lahore, Pakistan.

The inauguration ceremony, which was held on 18th October 2014, kicked off with a round of speeches from various dignitaries such as the Chief Minister’s Health Advisor, Health Secretary, Vice Chancellor of King Edward’s Medical University, Medical Superintendent of Mayo Hospital, Chairman of Medicine Department/Professor of East Medical Ward, and the Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of NRS International.

The ceremony was attended by family members and friends of Mrs. Bilqees Sarwar, founder of the Bilqees Sarwar Foundation, as well as the management staff, former and current faculty members of Mayo Hospital, faculty of East Medical Ward, and students of King Edward Medical University.

During the inaugural ceremony, participants expressed their awe about the transformation and impact of such wide scale renovation on future patients. Complete renovation of the East Medical Ward included proper flooring and ventilation system in the general ward, complete electrocardiogram (ECG) facility in intensive care unit, provision of electrolyzer and machinery operating kits in the laboratory, and full furnishing of faculty units.

Ribbon cutting was completed by Mrs. Sarwar, followed by the attendees’ brief tour of the renovated ward.

Continuous provision of medical facilities in Neurology Ward

In addition to the renovation of Male East Medical Ward, the Bilqees Sarwar Foundation also renovated Mayo Hospital’s neurology ward in 2012 and is continuously providing medical facilities including complete medical equipment in intensive care unit and fully equipped a laboratory to provide costly treatments such asplasmapheresis.

Recently, the Bilqees Sarwar Foundation undertook the provision of electroencephalogram (EEG) and electromyogram (EMG) machines. With this technical equipment, Bilqees Sarwar Foundation is enabling doctors and health professionals to diagnose and treat complex health and mental health issues, such as brain damage and muscle dysfunction.

The donated machines are imported from Japan and cost around USD 55,000.

Chemotherapy tests for oncology patients

Bilqees Sarwar Foundation is also assisting cancer patients in the Mayo Hospital through equipping the oncology ward by providing extensive chemotherapy test facility and blood transfusion, radiation and proper medication for patients during their treatments.

Future project: Renovation of the Female East Medical Ward

The Bilqees Sarwar Foundation has prioritized supporting women and girls in 2015 and will launch renovation activities in the female unit of Mayo Hospital’s East Medical ward. Currently, the ward is in extremely poor condition and lacks basic facilities.
